It’s been a long time coming, but I finally decided to start a blog. I know, it may seem crazy. It’s not like everyone has a blog these days or anything, and every foreigner who moves to Japan starts a blog to show their travels, their adventures, and how crazy Japanese people are. I want to start off by saying that my blog is generally Tokyo-specific.
I decided to start my blog because there are so many informative blogs out there about moving abroad (Japan included), tips & tricks of the trade, and living in a foreign country without being heavily medicated. But one thing I felt that was lacking when I was preparing for my own move was the lack of reality. It was all about a mythical land of fairies or overly harsh. I didn’t know if I was going to sink or swim. I didn’t expect to float down a lazy river.
I’ve always considered myself a pretty creative person if not smart, beautiful, and funny. So writing about something that is non-fiction is a “foreign” concept to me. Really, the subject matter just lends itself to too many dad jokes and puns.
To be honest, Japan has given me a freedom that I’ve never experienced before. But I’m not sure if that’s specific to living in another country or the fact I predicted the future elections in my dreams and decided to save myself before it was too late.
I’ve had friends ask me back home “how do I move to Japan?” “what’s it like?” “can you send me anime goods?” My answers are: google, too hot in summer, and buy it yourself off the internet machine.
But it got me thinking about how many other people want to move and just don’t know how to take the first step. Sure there are the blogs, but we all know the types- people who have been here too long and think they know everything, people who just moved here and think they know everything, people who know they know nothing and still publish shit anyways (hey it’s me!) It can be a lot to take in.
I’m not here to pat you on the back or crash your dreams into a brick wall so that they erupt in flames and simmer down into tiny ashes of depression. I am here to keep it real. The goal of this blog is to help you gain an understanding of the entire process which I hope will help you.And there a lot of us living here with stories, experiences, and advice to share! I hope that might posts will accurately reflect the feelings of the average gaijin living here.
